I see things like this. Both riders almost lost their lives because of a stupid rogue dog.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
In this angle you really see how close the second rider that fell came to becoming that semi’s lunch.

It almost looks like the second rider made a last ditch effort to throw his body away from the truck.

His last second jump out of the way was amazing. I’m guessing that dog didn’t make it out OK

Article says the rider thinks it got killed immediately on impact.

This is why you pay attention to your surroundings and slow down around animals. The dog was coming from an empty field and the ditch was super shallow so they should have seen it. Also the guy who hit it was riding to close to the cameraman and wouldn’t have seen it at all due to his position in the road. The second guy who crashed panicked and locked up his front wheel. I don’t see anything in this video that wasn’t avoidable, besides the dog not being locked up.

That’s insane. Did the first rider get hit by the camera bike in the second video? Looks like he’s about to.

Avoidable or not, shit happens, you can’t do it right 100% of the time, the 1% you mess up could leave you laying in front of a semi going 60mph.

It hard to tell, looks like the camera bike was almost stopped by then though.

Sometimes I want a bike. And then I see this and am immediately don't want one.

Yeah. I’ll still probly get one tho. Two wheels are just so much fun, but maybe I’ll stick to my moped.

Outside of riding, I love dogs. But when I’m on two wheels I fucking hate them. My parents neighbors have a horribly trained. Collie that has chased me on my bike twice when I’ve rode over for dinner.

Shit does happen, but this one was all on the riders. Part of riding is accepting that 1% and hoping for the best. Dogs and other animals will always run out into the road. This was easily avoidable with proper spacing and looking ahead. If they are all together the lead motorcycles should have signaled there was a potential threat and slowed everyone down.

Are you seriously blaming this accident on the rider? Like seriously?

Seriously yes, it was avoidable. The difference between a close call and an accident on a bike usually comes down to situational awareness and riding defensively. These guys are lacking that.

And yet none of this would have happened had a goddamn dog not run full speed perpendicular into traffic?

Whoever owns the dog should be fully liable for what happened because nothing at all would have happened without the dogs actions. The riders could have handled the situation much better though.

People who ride in large groups suck. The most near misses I’ve had, have been from riding in large groups. When it’s just me and my friend, we always keep tuned into what is happening, and slow the other person down, and use hand signals to point out dangers. We’ve ridden for years, and no accidents.

I suppose a lot could be said about control or anticipation by the bikers and the complete lack of responsibility on the part of whoever owns the former dog, but I’m really much more impressed by the driver of the bobtail tractor. Without a trailer, a semi tractor is very difficult to handle. That driver got on the brakes at the tire-smoking maximum and managed to keep it straight and avoid becoming another player in the goat rodeo. Honorable mention to the pickup driver who was paying enough attention to bring things to a safe stop, too.

I love dogs. I hate dogs allowed to roam free. More specifically, I hate dog owners who allow their dogs to roam free, especially aggressive dogs.
I have a long story/rant about one such owner and dog. You can read it here . The end result of that story was a broken bike, a broken hand, and several broken ribs. I wonder about the extent of their injuries.
This is what a small dog does to a bicycle frame at 25mph.

If it was a raccoon or a turkey it would have likely been similar though.

Suck it did. That day reminded me of the value of a good helmet, good gloves, and a backpack. The gloves prevented road rash on top of the broken hand; the helmet kept the back of my head off the pavement; and the backpack kept my back from being one giant road rash.

That second rider pulled off an amazing save, launching himself clear of the oncoming semi. He was that close to getting killed.

That second guy who falls, who falls off because he locks up his brakes. This is why I feel motorcycles are inherently unsafe, and I don’t think I could bring myself to ride one.
In a car, a small mistake could kill you. On a bike there are more mistakes that will kill you, they’re easier to make, and if you fall off you’ll more likely be killed.
And
, the mistakes of others are much more likely to kill you as well, even if you’re an excellent rider.
